What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and how does it differ from Western Medicine?

Updated: May 23, 2022

While Western Medicine primarily focuses on a patient's vital signs such as weight, blood pressure, body temperature, etc., TCM takes a more holistic approach when examining the body.

In Western Medicine practice, an illness is often viewed as a separate disruptive entity that has infiltrated in the body. TCM practice sees illnesses as an imbalance in the steady state of your body's flow of Qi (energy). A healthy body is a body with no blockages in qi. The primary role of a TCM practitioner is to locate and eradicate these blockages to allow the patient's body to regain its natural steady state balance.

Western Medicine often relies on pharmaceutical drugs to address health issues while TCM relies on natural remedies and body therapy.

Some methods of treatment include:

- Acupuncture

- Natural Herbal remedies

- Tui-Na (Oriental Massage Therapy)

- Cupping

- Moxibustion

- Gua-Sha

One MAJOR benefit of TCM is that there are few to no side effects that come with treatment.
